Liverpool city centre LIVE: Police cordon off multiple streets - Cavern Quarter sealed off

Multiple streets have been cordoned off in Liverpool city centre as police swarm the Cavern Quarter. Cordons are currently in place on Button Street, Mathew Street, Victoria Street and part of Whitechapel. Large sections of the Cavern Quarter were sealed off by officers on Monday, April 6, with police tape also extending onto Whitechapel and alongside the HSBC bank.

The Liverpool Echo reports refuse collectors working in the city centre were turned away from the area by officers guarding the cordon. Merseyside Police has now confirmed a man was arrested after reports of a fight near Clayton Square at around 4.45am, during which it was alleged one man threatened another with a firearm. A 37-year-old man remains in custody on suspicion of possession of a firearm without a certificate. Police said: "There is no suggestion a firearm was used and there are no reports of any injuries." The man is currently in custody and so far, no firearm has been recovered and the investigation remains ongoing.
