Miss dual-screen phones? This upcoming smartphone has a color e-ink screen and an LCD screen

Smartphones have big screens, little screens, AMOLED screens, LCD screens, and even e-ink screens. But rarely does a smartphone have two screens.

We've seen dual-screen smartphones in the past, but we've never seen one like this. Chinese manufacturer Bigme has become known for its e-ink devices, including smartphones, tablets, e-readers, and more. It's breaking new ground with the Bigme HiBreak Dual, which sports a color e-ink display, as well as a regular LCD display (via Android Authority).

We don't actually know much about the Bigme HiBreak Dual outside its name and unique selling point. Bigme posted a teaser image on the store page for the device, and there's not much there except for an email prompt to find out more when it's announced.

However, Bigme did take to Reddit to offer Redditors the chance to guess the device's specifications. Amongst those specs it prompted for discussion were stylus support, 5G connectivity, Android 14 or 15, and dual SIM support. While it's possible it's not going to offer all of these features in the Dual, it would be a little disappointing if it effectively hyped up a feature it wasn't going to offer. Therefore, you can probably expect it to have all of those.

Dual screen smartphones are nothing new, but they are quite rare. We've seen previous attempts from Yotaphone and Hisense, but such attempts have long been consigned to the history books. E-ink smartphones are more common, but come with big limitations, such as relatively low refresh rates. Slapping two screens onto a single device skirts those limitations, while still embracing what everyone loves about e-ink screen tech.

It's important to note that a second screen does rule out the presence of tech that uses the back of a phone, like magnets and wireless charging technology. However, Bigme doesn't bother with those anyway, so there's a sense that nothing tangible has been lost here.

We've seen the concept of second screens come back in the last year, with the popular rise of e-readers that attach to the back of your phone, like the Xteink X4 — but it's great to see a true dual-screen smartphone come back. It's a cool concept that never really caught on, and while the HiBreak Dual isn't likely to eclipse the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra in sales any time soon, those who've missed the Yotaphone can finally get their itch scratched.

The Bigme HiBreak Dual will be the first time we've ever seen a color e-ink dual screen smartphone, and you might assume it won't be coming to the US. Well, Bigme often offers its products in the US, so the chances are high it will actually be available for sale when it releases. Just keep an eye out for the price.
