UK furniture retailer plunges into administration - in business for 150 years

A major UK mattress producer has plunged into administration after being in business for 150 years. Airsprung has made 71 people redundant after facing years of difficult trading conditions and months of cashflow challenges. Administrators from PwC said directors were left with "no choice" but to place the company in administration.

Edward Williams, joint administrator, said: "It’s very sad that this well-known business with 150 years of history and iconic brands within the mattress and bed industry has had to go into administration. We know that this is an unsettling time for everyone impacted and we will support employees through the redundancy process."

Airsprung has been producing beds and mattresses from its factory in Trowbridge - the size of 18 football pitches - for more than 150 years. The huge facility can produce more than 2,000 mattresses a day.

It's also produced beds for hotels and filling for sports stadium seating under brands Gainsborough and Airofreem.

She said: "I would like to sincerely thank our customers and suppliers for their support over many years, and most importantly our employees for their dedication, professionalism, and hard work."
