Battlefield Studios has announced that Battlefield 6 has entered the next phase of its Season 1 content roadmap. The new Winter Offensive-themed Empire State map has launched, adding a winter theme with a snow-affected and chilly battlefield map to the title.
There’s also plenty of new content, and some major gameplay reworks of hit registration, movement and some other things affecting the player base’s perception of the game.
The main features of the Winter Offensive:
New Time-Limited Map: Ice Lock Empire State. A winter-shrouded version of Empire State featuring frozen streets and seasonal environmental visuals. New Time-Limited Multiplayer and Gauntlet Mode: A themed event mode playable across Domination, Conquest, and Gauntlet mission variations on Ice Lock Empire State featuring the event-limited “Freeze” mechanic. New Melee Weapon: the Ice Climbing Axe. Unlocked through the Winter Offensive Bonus Path. Portal updates: Ice Lock Empire State is available for use in supported Portal experiences during the event window. Battle Pass: Winter Offensive Bonus Path: an 11-tier, time-limited reward track featuring event cosmetics, XP Boosters, and the Ice Climbing Axe.There are some other major features from the patch, too. Hit Registration is a big deal, especially with the kill potential in games. It makes combat feel smoother and more accurate, and that’s something the game is addressing. It should make the bullet impact more consistent and predictable.
The other thing the devs have done is make the weapon handling better, so the game makes your weapons feel better and more reliable. That, combined with better hit reg, should make the gunplay, by and large, much better.
There are also some balance changes. One of the things the developers were looking for in the recently remade Battlefield Labs was balance and map feedback. Vehicles have been a hot topic for a while, with balance issues, and then lack of vehicles in certain maps and modes.
So, the Breakthrough and Rush modes have had some tweaking with attacker and defender balance, better sector flow and adjusted vehicles to change those balance stats.

With this being the last major patch of Season 1, we’ve seen a gradual evolution of the game. The game has a few additional maps and modes, a standalone BR, and some more weapons and vehicles. But, that’s not say that there aren’t some bucket list features that want adding to the game
One of the more prominent community complaints is the ”CoD movement.” There’s always a CoD comparison somewhere. There’s some sideways jumping, which maintains accuracy and causes some incredible model acceleration to get advantages in firefights.
Using the parachute seems to cause some strange acceleration issues too, as captured well in this Reddit clip. This feels like something that takes away from that more grounded movement and shoot approach with the accuracy penalty they added at the start of Season 1 / launch patches. It will be interesting to see their approach to tackling movement and skill to get edges.
Another thing people still discuss is the maps. The initial map launch was complained about a lot, while the BR mode and the recently added one are not too bad. More maps with more space and size is something on the cards. I do wonder if Battlefield Studios has had something up its sleeve ready to show in Season 2.
Water Vehicles are distinctly missing, too. Getting a naval assault type map, which existed on Midway type maps from 1943 / V, and Kharg Island springs to mind. There’s a perfect opportunity to do a line assault type map there to fit in with the game’s storyline. Maybe even expand the Empire State maps to get more use of the river boats if they wanted to expand on maps already in the game.
There are plenty of opportunities for something that other Battlefield games had, and what BF6 is distinctively missing.
