Marvel Rivals skin gacha goes down like a lead balloon as fans calculate percentages of getting new Psylocke outfit

Oh dear, it seems that NetEase has further upset some of the Marvel Rivals playerbase, as it’s introduced a skin gacha into the hero shooter. As you probably expect, the crowd hasn’t received it very well.

Typically, Marvel Rivals sells its skins straight up. However, this time, for a new Psylocke skin, they’ve introduced a gacha system with percentage rates and all.

Each balloon has an item, and if you happen to hit the jackpot, you won’t have to spend the full 2400 units of premium currency to get everything. So yes, it’s even more gacha than the stuff I’m usually writing about.

“Van Dyne’s: Grand Opening” costs 100 units to start, but this increases with each pull, so those hitting the jackpot the first time are actually saving a ludicrous amount of cash. Of course, the entire system has annoyed players who just want the skin.

It’s gotten to the point that one player over on Reddit has tried to break down the percentages. When the maths starts to get whipped out, you know the fanbase is infuriated.

According to Inayath2014, here’s what the breakdown looks like if you were to earn the “worst” of each item:

ItemAttempt 1Attempt 2Attempt 3Attempt 4Attempt 5Attempt 6Skin5%5.26%6.67%7.98%9.70%100%MVP10.56%13.53%18.67%30.67%90.30%–Spray21.11%27.07%37.33%61.35%––Emote21.11%27.07%37.33%–––Nameplate21.11%27.07%––––Emoji Bundle21.11%––––– Skin gachas just never work

Skin gachas have been received poorly in the actual gacha world, never mind a competitive shooter. A few weeks back, Girls Frontline 2 players were up in arms over the game’s skin gacha, dumping on the game on Steam, and even resulted in an in-person meeting between players and the development team.

The arguments there were exactly the same as they are now, in that players would rather just be able to buy the cosmetic.

Introducing gacha into a playerbase that might never have encountered it before seems like a bad move. Especially when the usual method of getting skins doesn’t involve some light gambling. One player online has called it “deceitful” over its presentation, while some have joked that they “can’t even win gacha” in Marvel Rivals. However, the general consensus is that it’s rotten.

I’ve also given developer NetEase a bit of flak over its gacha games elsewhere. Destiny: Rising, the mobile prequel to Bungie’s live service game, turns the game into a gacha, but presents a whole host of new problems that I dig into in my review on sister site GamesHub.
