Nintendo and Game Freak are well-known for their sometimes confusing freebie rollouts. If you've ever visited a crowded GameStop just to get a Pokémon distribution, you'll know what I mean.
If you've been playing Pokémon Legends: Z-A recently, you may have a freebie waiting for you, according to Serebii on X. Just know that not everyone is eligible for this reward.
Claim This Pokémon Legends: Z-A Freebie Now You May Already Have ItThis week is when special icons for Pokémon Legends: Z-A are rolling out. You can snag Mega Chesnaught, Mega Delphox, and Mega Greninja icons now, which you can use to your heart's content in the Nintendo Switch Online app.
Here is how you can claim your rewards:
Open the Nintendo Switch Online app (the red icon on the lower bar on your home screen). Select "Missions & Rewards" from the left navigation bar. Look in the upper-right corner of the app to find your icon collection; click it to view all your icons. Select Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Confirm that the icons are there (you'll also get 100 Platinum Points). The Nintendo Switch Online app can be confusing, so take some time to learn where everything is. It'll serve you well in the future, and it seems like the app in its current incarnation isn't going anywhere during the lifecycle of the Nintendo Switch 2.
It's Not Available For Everyone Only For Players During Certain Time Periods
As usual, this Pokémon promotion comes with a catch. You had to have played Pokémon Legends: Z-A from December 10 through January 5, 2026, in some capacity to be eligible for these Mega icons. Also, many users are reporting that they still don't have the icons in their inventory, so note that this seems to be a delayed rollout for Nintendo Switch Online users.
It was really easy to miss, but a "mission" to complete this task flashed across the Nintendo Switch Online screen recently, asking players to play between those time periods for the icons. Given how little the average player opens up the NSO app, though, I can see why people are confused.
Thankfully, this reward is fully cosmetic and out of the game, so folks aren't missing out on much if they haven't bought Pokémon Legends: Z-A yet. This is fully in line with The Pokémon Company's past tactics, though, featuring mechanics like Mystery Gifts, which erode over time and incentivize players to buy into Pokémon games early. If you have played Pokémon Legends: Z-A sometime in the last month, it's worth checking out your Nintendo Switch Online account just in case. You might log in and be pleasantly surprised to see some free icons.
