Three Rescued After Jet Ski Incident at Dun Laoghaire

A safety RIB on duty for Sunday afternoon (January 18th) in-harbour dinghy racing at Dun Laoghaire Harbour responded to reports of people in the water near the harbour mouth.

The crew was alerted to three adult males who had become separated from a jet ski, reportedly all travelling on the one craft.

All three were recovered from the water by the Dun Laoghaire Motor Yacht Club safety boat.

One individual was initially reported to be showing signs of distress.

The casualty was brought directly to the slip at the National Yacht Club, where an ambulance was waiting.

Further details were later provided by the RNLI.

Pagers sounded for Dún Laoghaire’s volunteer lifeboat crew at 3.53pm on Sunday, following a request from the Irish Coast Guard to assist three people in the water and an unmanned jet ski at the mouth of Dun Laoghaire Harbour.

As the crew prepared to launch the inshore lifeboat, a local RIB recovered the casualties from the water and brought them to the National Yacht Club pontoon, close to the lifeboat station.

The lifeboat launch was stood down, with crew members Dan Philips and Simon Wall diverting to the pontoon to assess the casualties.

Two people required casualty care, with one receiving urgent first aid while the National Ambulance Service was en route.

The casualties were handed over to paramedics and one person was taken to hospital. RNLI volunteers remained on scene for over an hour.

Speaking after the call-out, Lifeboat Operations Manager Eamon O’Leary said: “Our crew responding today completed refresher intensive casualty care training over the last fortnight, ending as recently as Friday.”

He added: “Today’s incident shows the value of contacting the Coast Guard early so the lifeboat can respond in a timely manner. If you see someone who might be in danger in the water, call 112 or 999 and ask for the Coast Guard.”
