Pedestrian is struck by a garbage truck in North Sydney

A pedestrian has been struck by a garbage truck, sparking a major police operation.

The man, aged in his 60s, was hit by the vehicle on the Pacific Highway, near Walker Street in North Sydney, just before 6am on Tuesday.

He was rushed to Royal North Shore Hospital in a serious condition.

The truck driver has been arrested and taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

The crash has caused massive traffic disruptions with authorities closing down the northbound lanes of the Pacific Highway.

Two of the three southbound lanes have been shut, with local traffic diversions in place.

Drivers have been warned to avoid the area.

NSW Police has set up a crime scene and an investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
