History‑making sailor Jazz Turner has been awarded the prestigious Duchess of Kent Trophy. The Cruising Association honoured her for a record solo, non‑stop and unassisted circumnavigation of the UK and Ireland.
Turner, 26, set off from Brighton Marina at 1230 on 2 June 2025. She sailed clockwise around the UK and Ireland. She completed the 2,070‑mile voyage in 28 days and 50 minutes. Turner rebuilt her boat, a 1975 Albin Vega 27 named FEAR (Face Everything And Rise), “from the ground up, total rewiring and everything else”. Alongside the physical challenge, she raised over £50,000 for charity.
She is the first woman and first disabled person to complete this circumnavigation. Turner lives with Ehlers‑Danlos Syndrome, a condition that affects connective tissue. It means she cannot bear weight on her legs and faces ongoing medical risks.
Robin Baron, President of the Cruising Association, said: “Jazz’s courage, skill and determination represent a landmark moment for inclusive sailing. … She has inspired sailors everywhere to challenge assumptions about what is possible on the water.”
The Duchess of Kent Trophy is given to a sailor who has achieved something exceptional in or around small boats. Past recipients include Kirsten Neuschäfer, Jimmy Cornell, Pip Hare and Jeanne Socrates.
Turner could not attend the presentation in person. Fiona Slay accepted the trophy on her behalf at the CA’s Flag Officers’ Lunch on 17 January 2025 at CA House, London. Sir Robin Knox‑Johnston presented the award.
The trophy was then presented to Turner at her home. Slay shared a message from Turner: “Completing the circumnavigation … made me realise that anything is possible with effort, perseverance and support from family and the sailing community.”
Turner also announced the launch of The Jazz Turner Foundation. She said funds she raised that are “not yet spent… will go into that charity, to help other disabled sailors.”
