Frosty Faustings XVIII has wrapped up and the impressive performances and victories have been outshone by the stinkiness within the venue over the weekend.
It’s an ongoing stereotype that the fighting game community smells bad. It’s consistently discussed over Reddit and social media, but never to fully deny the accusations; usually to just give the smell an excuse. I mean, a room full of dudes that are sweating from tension? There are bound to be a few rancid people who stink up the venue, especially since teenage boys are notorious for reeking.
Some tournament organizers have made a joke of the situation, even offering deodorant sticks to attendees. But the issue has continuously persisted, with some communities getting called out more than others. Super Smash Bros., a notoriously sweaty game, is usually put in the S+ tier of stinky competitors. Guilty Gear -Strive- was also continuously called out for being one of the smellier areas of the Evo venue.
On February 2nd, Punk ranted on X (formerly Twitter) that he was being made to feel bad for telling individuals at Frosty Faustings that they smelled bad.
“When I called fellas out for smelling bad, I was the problem. Now everyone’s doing it,” he tweeted. “Y’all really are funny on this app. Accept the stench that you all thought was acceptable when I was bringing it up, using it as an ‘excuse.'”
Indeed, Punk has been telling fighting game competitors that they stink for years now. Three years ago, Punk said that he regretted playing -Strive- after competing against the “worst smelling person in history,” claiming it was impossible to focus.
The FGC responded with memes and agreement, reflecting on their own experiences with stinky opponents. When one person called Punk out for being harsh, he commented that nobody should smell bad enough that it’s “the only thing in the area.”
However, things got a bit cruel when gamers started checking the -Strive- brackets for the event Punk attended that weekend. The FGC was hard at work, attempting to figure out which opponent Punk faced that smelled so bad. As the options started to get narrowed down, some fellow Guilty Gear players noted that those dudes smelled fine to them and the reaction was an exaggeration.
Punk started to get salty when some Guilty Gear players accused him of making excuses for losing. As most things go in the FGC, it definitely became a bit of a dramatic situation over nothing. This left Punk feeling some type of way earlier this week when he noticed other fighting fans gagging over the stenches at Frosty Faustings.
It was one of those “you can say they smell, but I can’t” kinda situations. However, it’s obvious that Punk will get more backlash than a random player due to his status and continuous harsh statements, trash talk, and premature pop-offs over the years.
He isn’t wrong, though.
For now, the fighting game community can’t escape the stinky smell that smells smelly allegations. I will be heading to GENESIS X3 next weekend, so wish me luck (or maybe lend me a spare mask or two).
