Parents Bring Newborn Home—Cat's Response Melts Hearts: 'His Baby'

Two parents from California couldn’t believe what their cat did when they brought home their newborn baby.

Kareem Khalil and Fifi Furrha (@dontstopmeowing) posted a reel on Instagram of the heartwarming moment their cat, Chase, climbed into their baby’s crib and curled up beside 2-week-old Jazelle, settling in as if he belonged there.

“It’s his baby now,” Fifi wrote in her caption. The clip shows Chase lying next to the newborn as though to appoint himself as the baby’s personal guardian.

According to both Kareem, 36, and Fifi, 33, who also have a 2-year-old son named Taj, Chase’s behavior wasn’t prompted or staged.

“Chase is very protective of our baby and he always tries to get into the crib with her,” Fifi told Newsweek. “This time he just climbed in on his own and settled down next to her.”

In the reel, Fifi tells him, “Chase, this is not your bed, buddy. I can’t have you sleeping in the baby’s bassinet.”

Trying to relocate him, however, is not taken lightly. Once Chase is settled next to the baby, he becomes visibly annoyed if anyone attempts to move him.

“He usually just gives us a look like we are interrupting something important,” Kareem added.

The caption, “It’s his baby now,” reflects more than just a sweet moment. Fifi said Chase has been remarkably gentle and affectionate since Jazelle was born.

“He acts as though the baby is his own baby and that his duty is to look after her,” she explained. “He is very over protective with her. We think he has imprinted on her.”

The reel has gone viral on Instagram, garnering 3.6 million views. Instagram users left thousands of comments, many of which were in admiration of Chase.

“He’s protecting her,” one user wrote.

“The arm around her at the end. Chase is truly the best cat brother ever!” another said.

A third called the cat Jazelle’s “guardian angel.”

That devotion hasn’t surprised longtime followers of Kareem and Fifi’s account, as Chase already has a reputation for being protective of his siblings online.

“We got a lot of comments about how sweet it is and how cats are such good older siblings,” Fifi said. “Many of our followers were not surprised by Chase's reaction because he has gained the reputation of being very clingy with our children.”
