Mets Spring Training Cuts Underway; 25-Year-Old Sent to Minors

The New York Mets have begun the task of cutting down a large group of spring training roster hopefuls to a 26-man team for opening day on March 26.

Right-handed pitcher Dylan Ross excelled in the minors last year and earned a call-up from the Mets on the second-to-last day of the regular season. He didn't end up making his major league debut, but that call-up meant he had to be added to the 40-man roster for the entirety of the offseason.

Though Ross might have hoped to blow the Mets away in spring training and earn a spot on the major league roster, that bid was shut down relatively quickly.

New York Mets hat

On Friday, the Mets announced that they had optioned Ross to Triple-A Syracuse to begin the season. Ross was the second player from the 40-man roster to be reassigned to the minors, as New York has slowly begun its spring training roster cuts.

Ross was a 13th-round pick for the Mets in 2022, but due to injuries, he only had one minor-league appearance under his belt entering last season. He opened some eyes in the organization with his performance across 49 games, spanning High-A through Triple-A.

With a 2.17 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 54 innings, Ross established himself as a name to watch in the Mets' bullpen picture moving forward.

Though he won't be a part of the bullpen on opening day when the Mets face the Pittsburgh Pirates, look for Ross' name to be one of the season's first call-ups if injuries happen at the major league level.
