Barcelona is currently four points in front at the head of the table, but will be hard-pressed to extend its advantage over Real Madrid when travelling to San Mames.
The Blaugrana have enjoyed a somewhat dominant record against Los Leones in recent years, winning the last five consecutive clashes between the two teams. That includes a 5-0 win and a 4-0 win from earlier this season, having already met in each of La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup in recent months.
That being said, Athletic has waded through a quagmire of form and emerged on the other side of late, having managed to avoid defeat in its last five league games. The Basque side were recently ousted from the Copa del Rey semi-finals after home-and-away losses to bitter rival Real Sociedad, with La Liga now the only distraction left this term.
Hansi Flick’s men have earned morale-boosting wins over Villarreal (4-1) and Levante (3-0) since suffering a surprise loss to Girona last month. However, a newly reinvigorated Athletic could be just the kind of test that could offer another roadblock.
