Police seek hit-and-run driver after 14-year-old bicyclist hit by SUV in Hatboro

HATBORO, Pa. (WPVI) -- Hatboro police are searching for the driver of an SUV who struck a 14-year-old bicyclist and then drove away Monday afternoon, leaving the teenager with scrapes and bruises.

The teen, Jaden Brill, said he is still processing what happened.

"I was like in shock," he said.

Brill was riding his bike on the sidewalk along South York Road and entered a crosswalk when a black Toyota RAV4 leaving the parking lot of a senior living community on School Road hit him, police said. Investigators said the driver had a green light at the time.

"I'm lucky to get out of that without being more hurt than I am. It could have been a lot worse," Brill said.

Surveillance video captured the collision, showing Brill and his bike thrown into the intersection. He managed to get up and run to the sidewalk. Police said the female driver briefly pulled over.

"She got out for a few seconds. It looked like she looked to see if her car was OK, and then she got back in her car and continued on her way," Hatboro Police Detective Sgt. Conner Dilks said.

Police said the SUV continued northbound and had a license plate containing the letters MTX.

"I can't imagine a world where you strike a child on a bicycle and don't stick around to make sure the child is OK, and it's properly documented with police as you're required to do by law," Dilks said.

According to police, a preliminary investigation shows Brill did not have the right of way. However, detectives said the driver will face criminal charges because she left the scene.

Brill's father, Jeff Brill, said he hopes the driver comes forward.

"Even if Jaden was at fault and went through a light, you still check, it's a kid. It boggles my mind someone would do that," he said. "I feel like she needs to turn herself."

Brill said he understands the traffic laws for bicyclists and considers the crash a lesson learned.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact them at 215-675-2832.
