How Starmer survived another day of political pressure

The embarrassment caused by the new ambassador came as the scandal created by the last one - Lord Mandelson - caused yet more political damage to the Prime Minister.

Today his former Chief of Staff told a Parliamentary Committee that Sir Keir Starmer had relied on his advice to appoint Mandelson and admitted he'd "got it wrong".

And tonight the Prime Minister was forced to see off a vote from MPs on whether he should face a Parliamentary investigation.
