Garda rushed to hospital after city centre public order incident

A garda has been rushed to hospital with injuries to his arm after a public order incident in the city centre this afternoon. A man has also been arrested after the incident on Abbey Street at around 1pm. The garda was taken to the nearby Mater Hospital, where his condition is believed to not be life threatening. Gardai say welfare services will be put in place for the officer. The arrested man, aged in his late 30s, is currently being held at a garda station in the city centre. A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí have arrested a man following a public order incident, that occurred at Abbey Street, Dublin 1, this afternoon, Saturday 8th March 2025, at approximately 1pm. During the course of the incident, a member of An Garda Síochána received injuries to his arm, believed to be non-life-threatening at this time. "He was taken to the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital for treatment. A man (aged in his late 30’s) was arrested at the scene, and is currently detained at a Garda Station in the Dublin City Centre area. "Garda welfare services will be put in place for the Garda member. Investigations ongoing." President of the GRA Mark O'Meara said: "I would just like to wish our injured colleague a speedy recovery in what was an extremely difficult situation. Once again this a stark reminder of the dangers our members face on a daily basis while carrying out their duties and protecting the public. Another member also received injuries in the incident and our thoughts are with them both and their families. "While it can be rewarding, a career in policing can be an extremely dangerous one and there is never a reason or excuse for attacks and assaults on our members. I commend these colleagues on their bravery and actions today and also any members who find themselves in harms way while policing the frontline."
