Human skull found in plastic SuperValu bag

A garden remains sealed off in Cork this afternoon as Gardai investigate the discovery of a human skull. On Friday, Gardai were alerted to human remains - believed to be a skull - being found outside a property in west Cork. A forensic examination is being conducted today to establish the circumstances surrounding the identity of the deceased and how it came to be at the location. CorkBeo reports that the skull was found in a SuperValu-branded shopping bag yesterday afternoon in the garden of a home in an area between Eyeries and Ardgroom on the Beara Peninsula. Speaking to the publication, local Councillor Finbarr Harrington described it as a "highly unusual" incident for such a "peaceful and safe" area. He said: "Beara is such a quiet place to live, something like this hasn't happened in the past. My thoughts are with the owners of the house and the surrounding homes in the area." A local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, told CorkBeo that there is currently no indication of how long the skull had been on the premises. "I heard Gardaí were there late last night but didn't know what was going on," they explained. "At first we thought it was a body. God knows how long it's been there. You'd never hear of anything like this around here." Gardai in west Cork confirmed the discovery and revealed that enquiries are ongoing at the time of writing. "Gardaí were alerted to the discovery of partial human remains at a location near Eyeries, Co. Cork yesterday afternoon, Friday 18th April 2025," a spokesperson for An Garda Siochana told The Irish Mirror. "The scene is currently preserved pending technical examination. The remains, believed to be a human skull, were removed for further examination and DNA analysis."
