Probe launched after inmate dies of suspected drugs overdose
Investigations are underway after a prisoner died of a suspected drugs overdose in the Midlands Prison in Co Laois. The prisoner, who is understood to be in his 30s, was found unresponsive in his cell at the medium-security prison in Portlaoise on Sunday morning. Multiple investigations have now been launched into the inmate's sudden death, which was confirmed by the Irish Prison Service (IPS) this afternoon. In a statement to the Irish Mirror, an IPS spokesperson said: "The Irish Prison Service can confirm a death in custody at the Midlands Prison on 20th April 2025. "As with all death in custody, the Irish Prison Service, the Office of the Inspector of Prisons and An Garda Siochana investigate where circumstances warrant." The IPS spokesperson confirmed that the official cause of death will be determined at a later date by the Coroner's Office.
