RTE star bids for Liveline job as she throws hat in ring to replace Joe Duffy

Liveline's Brenda Donohue has given her thoughts on Joe Duffy's next moves post-retirement, predicting he'll launch his own podcast and pen a few books. She also revealed that the Ballyfermot-born broadcaster is currently penning thank you notes to those who missed out on his last hurrah on June 27, reports the Irish Mirror. Brenda said: "He will (do a podcast) and I'd say he'll write a few books." The Co Kildare native had the honour of producing Mr Duffy's final Liveline episode as he bid farewell to RTE after an impressive 37-year stint. She said: "I've produced it on and off. I love the programme. When it's good, there's nothing like it., It is the callers (that make it). I brought up a load of people who had their lives changed (on the final show). "He wants a list of people I had up on the show because he wants to send them cards, notes and thank you and all the rest. There was a woman called Grainne Madden I didn't get to talk to and her two daughters have CF and they needed a particular drug that would change their lives. "There was a fella who came up from Lipton's shop in Clones and he did the Fiver Friday. He got 20 other shops to do it and they still continue it at Christmas in the town. He was saying it brought business into the town. "There was Michael O'Sullivan, the carer for Matt Murphy. They were a couple who married who weren't gay and it was about inheritance tax and there was a woman reunited with her sister after more than 40 something years." Brenda has thrown her hat in the ring for the Liveline job, confirming to us that she's set to let RTE chiefs know she's eyeing the coveted presenter role. She previously said: "Am I going to put an expression of interest in like half the country is for the job? Yes. I will. I talk to people. I like people. They are the things that are going for me. I spent all my life talking to people. Hearing their ups and downs..I love all that. But it is a hard show. It is really tough. You've a great team, they work so hard." Boasting over three decades of experience at RTE, Brenda occasionally steps in to produce Liveline. "It is kind of obvious on one level but on another level, it's not. I don't know. I haven't gone banging about it. They know I'm good at talking to people. "And I care about people. I'm always very interested. I go out for a walk and I meet people who tell me about their dogs etc... so people naturally tell me things. They know that." She added: "It isn't something I have begged for but I will express interest. Look to be honest, I haven't heard my name being mentioned and I probably don't have the push myself to push it. But I know I talk to people well and I do love a good chat. I love people but it is a hard gig."
