West Donegal credit union members targeted in phishing scam

Members of a West Donegal credit union are being targeted in an online phishing scam.

Management at Gaoth Dobhair Credit Union has been forced to issue a warning after a number of members received the bogus text messages.

It has not been disclosed if any members have lost money as a result of the scam.

The texts inform members that their credit union account has been placed on hold and that the member must “review their account.”

They are then asked to click onto a fraudulent link and a reference number.

Once members have clicked on the bogus link, they are then asked for personal information in a bid to steal online account log-in details.

Credit union members are warned that fraudsters then use the information to take over accounts and commit fraud.

The latest text message scam is sophisticated.

A spokesperson for Comhar Creidmheasa Ghaoth Dobhair warned “The domain names used often appear similar to legitimate Irish credit union sites, but are designed to deceive.

“The messages may appear to come from the same message thread as genuine credit union texts due to SMS spoofing.”
