Hijack season 2 on Apple TV is topping the charts right now, but if you don't feel like waiting every week for a new episode, you should check out Into the Night, another exciting plane hijacking series with a sci-fi twist. It's a surprisingly convenient plot point for any thriller show, a hijacking.
You have the cast in one place, the action never stops, the twists come with a turn of dialogue, and you usually only need to pay for one location. Producers and creatives rejoice. Hijack season 2 is showing the power of the storyline, but Netflix's Into the Night showcased the effectiveness years ago.
Into The Night Is A Science Fiction Apocalyptic Hijack TV Show Set On A Plane
Into the Night is a Belgian apocalyptic science fiction drama series that premiered on Netflix in May 2020, with season 2 coming in 2021. Based on Polish author Jacek Dukaj's 2015 novel The Old Axolotl, Into the Night is one of the best science fiction shows you can find on Netflix.
The series begins with a group of passengers on a large plane, headed from Brussels on the red-eye. As the flight begins, Terenzio (Stefano Cassetti), a NATO officer, forces his way onto the plane, taking over, and insists the plane leave immediately. His unbelievable warnings of dangerous sunlight prove to be confirmed.
A global event now means that any exposure to sunlight results in death. Unsure of what to do, the plane continues flying westward, to avoid the rising sun, making dangerous stops to refuel as the world descends into chaos and anarchy. Season 2, the final season, takes place primarily in a bunker found in the first.
Hijack And Into The Night Both Feature Unusual Hijackings
Hijack and Into the Night both feature atypical hijacking stories, at least compared to the kind we hear about in real life. In Hijack season 1, the hijacked plane happens to have an expert business negotiator on the flight, Idris Elba's Sam Nelson. Season 2 is even more unusual of a storyline.
In season 2, Sam is now on a train, but even stranger, he's the one doing the hijacking. Not many hijacking TV shows and movies feature the protagonist as the hijacker, though in a way, the hijacker in Into the Night does have good reasons for doing so. The sun's coming up to kill after all.
The difference between the two shows, beyond the obvious sci-fi elements, is that the hijacking in the Netflix series is a means to the end of the story rather than the whole show. If you want a full hijacking storyline, try Hijack; if you only want it to be a part of the story, Into the Night is for you.
