The ageless Queen Letizia of Spain, 53, recreates her go-to look from her days as the Princess of Asturias

It is precisely this formula – a sharp neutral suit elevated by a bold block colour or patterned blouse – that Queen Letizia often wore during her days as the Princess of Asturias. After announcing her engagement to the then-Prince Felipe on 1 November 2003, Letizia delivered a masterclass in regal dressing during her stint as future queen.

Case in point? Her meeting with President José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, five days before she tied the knot with Felipe, or her outing to the closing of the European Association for Cancer Research in July 2012, when she paired a Felipe Varela white suit with an emerald green blouse. She even wore a white suit when she and the then Prince of Asturias announced their engagement.

Born on 15 September 1972 as Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano, Queen Letizia of Spain came from a middle-class family in Otezia, Northern Spain. Her parents were journalist Jesús José Ortiz Álvarez and nurse María de la Paloma Rocasolano Rodríguez.

Much like her father, Letizia harboured ambitions to become a journalist, ultimately pursuing a bachelor’s degree in the field at the Complutense University of Madrid. After the end of her degree, the future queen doubled down, gaining a master’s degree in audiovisual journalism from the Institute for Audiovisual Journalism Studies. On graduating, she worked at both the Spanish-language versions of Bloomberg and CNN. During her time as a journalist, she reported on major events, including 9/11 and the Iraq War. In 1998, she married Alonso Guerrero Pérez, a writer, but they divorced just one year later.
