In the last three years, Russia has carried out at least 49 attacks across Europe as part of a hidden war that Moscow is waging on Ukraine's allies. These include arson attacks that have burned down arms factories in Germany and Bulgaria, hack attacks that have disabled railways and caused planes to veer off course, and at least one assassination on a Russian helicopter pilot who defected. This clandestine form of warfare was perfected by Russia during the Cold War, when it had to devise ways of fighting America without risking nuclear armageddon, but Putin has now brought it into the 21st Century.
