Couple Welcome Baby Through Surrogate—Then Comes an Unexpected Twist

A woman who feared she may never get to start a family has finally got her wish after becoming a mom to two "twiblings" born less than two months apart.

For many years, Mia Kaercher, 31, and her husband endured fertility challenges and heartbreaking loss. They struggled to find answers as to why they couldn’t conceive, and, as a result, they were encouraged to look into surrogacy instead.

Kaercher, of Las Vegas, Nevada, told Newsweek that surrogacy was their best option to create "the family we dreamed of" for so long. She and her husband discussed it at length and decided to proceed with an embryo transfer in January 2025.

"It was a conversation my husband and I needed to have together with a lot of questions and what-ifs, and ultimately, we decided together we would move forward," Kaercher said.

"We had the embryo transfer with our surrogate in January, and then you have to wait 10 days until she goes back in for blood work to confirm whether it was successful, which is when we found out it was."

The couple were "over the moon" when they found out the transfer was successful. They have gone through similar experiences in the past, and every time it had failed.

But, this time, they were finally one step closer to making their dream become a reality.

"This felt like the biggest step forward and finally a chance to start our family. We were overjoyed," Kaercher continued.

Throughout the excitement and anticipation for the new arrival, there was another feeling that Kaercher simply couldn’t shake: nausea. She shrugged it off for a while, telling herself that it was likely just everything else she was dealing with.

After all, Kaercher didn’t believe pregnancy was even an option because of all the fertility problems she had faced.

"I was hoping for the chance to carry someday, so I started an intense lifestyle change and elimination diet with my husband to try and heal my body. I also signed up with an acupuncturist who jump-started this journey," Kaercher said.

"A few days in, I felt more uncomfortable than ever rather than feeling better as I hoped for. That’s when we thought something may be off and took a pregnancy test."

To the couple's surprise, the pregnancy test was positive.

Kaercher couldn’t comprehend what she was seeing at first, telling Newsweek that they "laughed and cried tears of joy."

Both Kaercher’s and the surrogate’s pregnancies were great, bar a few complications that Kaercher experienced in the latter stages. Nonetheless, she was just so grateful to become a mom not once but twice over.

Their first child, Woods, welcomed via surrogate, was born on September 26. Kaercher said it was "the best feeling in the world" to see her son arrive safely.

Just a matter of weeks later, she gave birth to Cohyn on November 7, a healthy baby girl.

"When Woods was born, it was surreal; a little human that was half me and half my husband? What a gift. Then, when Cohyn arrived, it was incredible to have my mom and husband there, and our son being a part of the experience. It was uniquely beautiful and the perfect way to add our daughter to our amazing family," Kaercher said.

Woods and Cohyn are thriving already, and Kaercher has taken to calling them her "twiblings" as they are so close in age. Kaercher and her husband are also adapting well to becoming a family of four, as she firmly believes this was "perfectly meant to be."

After finding out that she was going to be a first-time mom to two babies in under two months, Kaercher couldn’t resist documenting the experience online (@miamoore705 on TikTok). Many of her "twibling" updates have gone viral with millions of views, as internet users hailed the heartwarming story.

The online reaction has been overwhelmingly positive and kind, as people showed their support for the mom-of-two.

Kaercher said: "I’m so grateful for my healthy growing family, the platform and community we’ve built. I just want all women, and men, to advocate for themselves, their health, and trust their intuitions, because, if I hadn’t, I would never been in the situation I am now living my dream.

"Woods is already sleeping through the night, and Cohyn is so delicate and precious. They have such different personalities and are growing so fast. They brighten our world."
