A batch of Vega Farm eggs that was recalled on December 5, 2025, for potential Salmonella contamination has been linked to 63 salmonella-related illnesses across California, according to the latest update from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), which was issued on December 12.
The CDPH is urging consumers and businesses not to eat, serve, or sell Vega Farms in-shell brown eggs with handler code 2136 and sell-by dates of December 22 or earlier, packaged in 1-dozen cartons, 30-egg trays, or 15-dozen cases. The eggs were distributed by Vega Farms to restaurants, grocery stores, co-ops, and farmers’ markets across California.
This advisory follows a salmonella outbreak that has, at the time of publishing, affected 63 California residents. According to the CDPH, 13 people have been hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported.
Investigators from the CDPH and the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) identified Vega Farms as the supplier of the suspect eggs. Multiple egg and environmental samples from the company tested positive for salmonella, and whole genome sequencing confirmed that at least one sample matched the outbreak strain.
Consumers with the recalled lot of eggs have been told by the CDPH to either throw them away or return them to the place they bought them from for a full refund. Businesses should immediately stop selling or serving the affected eggs and thoroughly wash and sanitize all items and surfaces that may have come into contact with the recalled eggs.

Symptoms of salmonella infection usually start between six hours and six days after exposure, and may include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Most people recover within a week, but severe cases—particularly among vulnerable groups, including children under 5, adults over 65, and immunocompromised individuals—can require hospitalization.
Anyone who develops an illness after consuming the recalled eggs is advised to seek medical care immediately.
In its official statement, the CDPH said: "Anyone finding these products for sale should call the CDPH Complaint Hotline at (800) 495-3232 or submit an electronic report to CDPH’s Food and Drug Branch.”
It also said: “CDPH is partnering with local health jurisdictions to ensure recalled products are not available for purchase by consumers. CDPH and CDFA are supporting the firm [Vega Farms] with guidance and resources to eliminate salmonella and prevent future outbreaks.”
Ongoing testing and investigations are expected to reveal further information about the outbreak’s scope, and further updates may be provided if new details emerge. Consumers and businesses are encouraged to stay informed via the CDPH website and report any ongoing concerns. Anyone experiencing symptoms is advised to seek medical advice promptly.
