Over 3,000 children in Dublin face summer in homeless hostels
Thousands of children in Dublin will spend this summer in emergency accommodation. There are currently 1,546 homeless families in Dublin, including 3,487 children, according to Department of Housing figures for March which were released today. Erene Williamson, The Salvation Army’s Homeless Services Ireland Lead said: "We do our utmost for families and single adults in every one of our Lifehouses across Dublin. But with school summer holidays approaching, it is appalling that for more than 3,000 children, what should be the most carefree time of their year, is spent in emergency accommodation. "Our incredible staff work extremely hard to make sure places such as Houben House (Ireland’s largest family hub), are safe and comfortable refuges when families need us most. But do they not compare to the joy and contentment of independent living."

Sinn Fein spokesperson for housing, Eoin O Broin TD called on the Government “to reverse the funding cuts for vital homeless prevention housing schemes”. Deputy O Broin said: "Today’s report from the Department of Housing shows yet another record increase in the number of adults and children in emergency accommodation. In March there were 15,418 people including 4,675 children in Department of Housing funded emergency accommodation. Last month saw increases in adult, child, family and pension homelessness.

"It is completely unacceptable that as homelessness rises yet again, the Government are slashing funding for vital homeless prevention schemes including the tenant-in-situ scheme and the housing first programme."
