Heatwave 'very uncertain' but weather expert pinpoints day of temperature boost
A weather expert has pinpointed the exact day we should see temperatures soar in Ireland next week - but he has also poured cold water over talks of a heatwave. Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather said that "there is a chance" a band of warm air will move up towards Ireland and the UK next week, which could usher in a spell of sunny weather from Tuesday onwards. But he warned that the current forecast is "very uncertain" - and that we shouldn't be expecting a heatwave just yet. He said: "Some people have asked me about some headlines that, especially for the UK, they could see 30 degrees. Yes, it is going to get milder. There is a chance of some warm air moving up towards Ireland as well next week. "Now, how far exactly that comes? It's very uncertain. Likely from Wednesday, well from Tuesday into Wednesday next week, we could see some warmer air over us. "How long it lasts? It could be very short lived. If you look at the forecast here of upper air temperatures, you can see those yellows and oranges starting to move up towards Ireland and the UK. "And around Wednesday next week, it does move up over us so we could see temperatures getting back above 20 degrees in Ireland. But it's very uncertain how long it will hang around, it could be quite short lived. Looking at the assembles here, if you look at the top line, you can see the spread that shows you just how uncertain it is. "So yes, it should warm up a little bit next week, but I wouldn't be planning on a heatwave." Met Eireann have also said that Tuesday is the day to watch for an increase in temperatures. Their current indications are that Tuesday "will be a warm and sunny day" with highs of up to 20C. But before the big temperature shift, Dubliners are currently enduring one more dull and damp day to get it. The capital is wet and nippy today, with rain set to stick around throughout the day. Temperatures will settle in the 11-12C range with some fresh southerly winds to boot. The rain will ease somewhat tonight, with some patches of mist and fog also developing, and lows of 6C. And here is what the rest of the forecast says for the weekend and early next week: Overview: Some rain at first but gradually becoming more settled and milder through the rest of the weekend, with plenty of dry and bright weather for early next week. Saturday: Mist and fog will slowly clear through tomorrow morning. It will brighten up as it does with spells of sunshine and just the odd light shower afterwards. However, there is a chance that fog will linger near coasts. Mild with highest temperature of 15 or 16 degrees in light to moderate southwest winds. Saturday night: Becoming cloudy overnight with outbreaks of rain across the southwest, west and north. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 11 degrees in moderate to fresh southerly winds. Sunday: Any rain will clear on Sunday morning followed by sunny spells and well scattered showers. Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees, but feeling a little chillier in moderate to fresh southwest winds. Sunday night: Largely dry with clear spells at first and isolated showers. Cloud will build from the west overnight. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees in moderate southerly winds. Monday: After a rather cloudy start, it will brighten up through Monday with hazy spells of sunshine developing. Dry for most but the odd light shower will occur. Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees with moderate southerly winds easing light later. Tuesday: Current indications suggest that Tuesday will be a warm and sunny day. Highest temperatures of 16 to 20 degrees in light to moderate southeast winds. Further outlook: There is a good deal of uncertainty in the forecast for the rest of next week. Nearby high pressure looks likely to bring plenty of dry weather and mild or warm conditions but some spells of rain or showers cannot be ruled out.
