Project Zomboid is one of those indie darling games that is always in development. And while the small dev team works on massive updates and needs to undergo a lot of testing, tool upgrades, and other things, modders often give life to the game. Last year, we had the nuclear-themed mod come out about players racing to stop the nuke and survive the apocalypse as the Knox virus began to break out in the early confusion days. Now, for us Brits, we get a mod closer to home.
Over on Reddit, a modder named Mission_7903 posted that they’re working on a map that more closely resembles a small town in Suffolk, England. The idea is to have a quaint English charm village, with recreated map assets that more closely match British staples. From chip shops to corner shops, it’s modeling buildings and spaces that more resemble how we’d have to scavenge and survive if a zombie-like virus, or some other crazy pandemic that completely wiped out all forms of logistics turned up. COVID, you weren’t the one, but you sure did make going to the toilet harder than it needed to be.
As of right now, the map is rather small, but it fits the size of one of those very small villages you might drive through from time to time. There’s the local newsagent, a local dentist, and British-style townhouses blended in with old Tudor period cottages. Of course, the big stone church that’s been there since medieval times, alongside some other facets and facades of the British town.
There’s also good commentary about UK life at the time. From the Northern Ireland ‘Troubles’, the role of the police, to UK gun legislation at the time, it could play a part in the map and gun balance, with guns being more common back then than they are now. Plus, farmers and those with licences can have rifles and shotguns. Given it’s set in a more rural part of England, we could certainly see some roleplay pop up here and there for how UK looting would theoretically work during this setting and location. One could certainly have a lot of fun trying to predict how this goes.
There’s currently no ETA on when that project will be released to the public. But it seems to have an interest in the Zomboid subreddit. So, if you happen to stumble on this, know we think it’s neat and offer something new to try out in a completely different setting.
In the meantime, you can still mess around with unstable multiplayer in build 42. Also, if you want more UK themed content, Fallout: London was also pretty cool when we played that last year. It’s nice to see the UK fans give the UK some love in our favorite games.
